A CLOCK MADE FOR THE DIVINE...
In 1665 pope Alexandre VIII (Rome 1657-1679) who was unable to sleep during the night, asked the Campani brothers (well-known family of clockmakers in Rome) to build a clock that could tell the time in the night but wouldn't make any sound (tick-tock) so that the clock would not keep him awake. The Campani brothers honoured by this request, invented and developped their "silent" escapement movement and after several prototypes, delivered the clock to the pope. An oil lamp placed under a chimney inside the clock case was illuminating the dial and allow the owner to read the time through the openworked chapters. The circular move of these chapters is a allegory of the sun path. After this, in the following years, the Campani brothers kept improving their movement and building different night clocks for the elite, the upper-class, top-dignitaries of the catholic church, princes, nobles, etc... Very popular among the most significant and powerful collectors of that time across Italy and Europe, Pietro Thommaso Campani was active in Rome from 1656 to 1694. He built the night clock presented on this page during the year 1682...
